Does Gemini Train on Your Conversations? How Google Uses Your Chats

By default, Google can use your consumer Gemini Apps conversations to improve and train its AI. With Gemini Apps Activity turned on, a subset of your chats may be reviewed by human reviewers and used to help train Google's models. You can turn this off in your Google Account, after which future conversations are not sent for human review or used for training. The short answer

Gemini is tied to your Google Account, and its data handling runs through a setting called Gemini Apps Activity. While it is on, your conversations can be used to improve Google's services, including the models behind Gemini, and a subset can be seen by human reviewers. While it is off, future conversations are excluded from both.

How human review actually works

This is the part that surprises people. Google states that a subset of conversations are reviewed by human reviewers, including trained service providers, to judge whether responses were low quality, inaccurate, or harmful, and to suggest better responses that help the models improve.

Two facts matter for your privacy:

• Reviewed chats are disconnected from your Google Account before they are sent for review.
• Reviewed chats can be retained for up to three years, and that retention is separate from your normal activity history.

The practical implication: while activity is on, treat anything you type as something a reviewer could read. Do not paste confidential, personal, or client information into Gemini in that state.

How to turn off training and human review

To stop future conversations being used for training or sent for human review:

1. Go to myaccount.google.com.
2. Open Data and Privacy.
3. Find Gemini Apps Activity.
4. Turn it off.

With activity off, future conversations are not sent for human review and are not used to train Google's models. One nuance to understand: even with activity off, conversations can still be stored briefly, up to around 72 hours, to deliver the service and process feedback, though they will not appear in your Gemini Apps activity. Turning activity off is forward-looking; it does not retroactively pull back data already used.

Activity, history, and training are different things

As with ChatGPT and Claude, do not confuse three separate ideas:

• Training and review: whether Google learns from your chats and whether reviewers see them. Controlled by Gemini Apps Activity.
• Activity history: the record of past conversations you can browse, which is also affected by the activity setting.
• Account-level controls: Gemini lives inside your Google Account, so deletion and retention can be managed alongside your other Google data.

Consumer Gemini versus Gemini in Google Workspace
