Gemini vs ChatGPT Conversation History: Which Is Better for Retrieval?

Gemini and ChatGPT are the two highest-traffic consumer AI assistants, and many people use both. Both save your conversations, but they store them in different places, retain them on different rules, and give you different controls. The shared limitation

Start with what they have in common, because it shapes everything else: neither platform lets you search the content of your past conversations well. ChatGPT's native search matches conversation titles. Gemini lets you browse recent chats and manage your activity, but does not offer deep full-text search of message bodies. Where each platform stores history

Gemini stores history in your Google Account through the Gemini Apps Activity setting (also called Keep Activity). When it is on, your conversations are saved to your account and managed from your Gemini Apps Activity page. When it is off, conversations are still kept for up to 72 hours so Google can provide the service, but they are not added to your activity history.

Retention and deletion controls

This is where the two genuinely differ.

Gemini's model is built around Google's activity controls, so retention is configurable out of the box. ChatGPT keeps everything by default until you delete it, then removes deleted chats from its systems within roughly 30 days under standard practice. If granular auto-delete matters to you, Gemini gives you more dials; if "keep everything until I say otherwise" suits you, ChatGPT does that by default.

Search and organisation

ChatGPT offers title-based search, and full-history search for Plus and Pro users, plus Projects (folders with their own instructions) on paid plans. Its in-product history is the more mature of the two for navigating a large archive.

Export

Both platforms let you get your data out. ChatGPT offers a data export from Settings that includes conversations as JSON and human-readable HTML. Gemini history can be exported through Google's data tools (Google Takeout and the activity controls). Exports are point-in-time snapshots: useful for backup, but you then have to search the files yourself.
