Kimi History Not Loading: Causes and Fixes

When Kimi's sidebar at kimi.ai loads blank, shows a spinner that never resolves, or is missing conversations you know you had, the conversations are usually not gone. In most cases this is a loading or account issue that clears with a few standard steps. Kimi's support for very long conversations adds one extra wrinkle: large threads can be slow to render, which sometimes looks like a failure when it is really just loading.

Step 1: Check whether Kimi itself is up

Before troubleshooting your own setup, rule out a problem on Kimi's side.

1. Open kimi.ai in a separate tab and see whether the main interface loads at all
2. Try sending a new message; if that also fails, the issue may be platform-wide
3. Search for reports of a Kimi or Moonshot AI outage

If there is an active outage, your history returns once the service recovers. There is nothing to fix locally during a platform-side incident.

Step 2: Hard refresh the page

The simplest fix for an intermittent loading failure is to bypass the cache and force a fresh load.

• Windows or Linux: Ctrl + Shift + R
• Mac: Cmd + Shift + R

If the sidebar was failing to load because of a stale cached state, this often resolves it on its own.

Step 3: Allow time for very long conversations

Kimi's large context window means a single conversation can be enormous. A thread containing long documents or extended analysis takes longer to render than a short chat.

• If one specific conversation hangs while opening, give it a moment before assuming it failed
• If it consistently stalls, the cause is likely the conversation size combined with a slow connection, not lost history
• The sidebar listing and an individual long thread can fail independently: a blank sidebar is a different problem from one long chat being slow

Step 4: Test in incognito to rule out extensions

Browser extensions are one of the most common causes of a chat app failing to load history.

1. Open an incognito or private window (Ctrl+Shift+N on Chrome or Edge, Cmd+Shift+N on Mac; Ctrl+Shift+P on Firefox)
2. Sign into kimi.ai
3. If the sidebar loads in incognito but not your normal window, an extension is interfering

Incognito disables extensions by default. The usual culprits are ad blockers, privacy extensions, script blockers, and VPN browser extensions. To find the specific one:

1. Re-enable your extensions one at a time in a normal window
2. Reload Kimi after enabling each
3. When history stops loading, the last extension you enabled is the cause
4. Disable it or allow kimi.ai in its settings

Step 5: Clear Kimi site data

Corrupted local data can stop the sidebar from loading correctly. Clearing site data for Kimi specifically forces a clean session.

1. While on kimi.ai, open the site information menu in the address bar (the icon next to the URL)
2. Open the cookies and site data, or site settings, option
3. Clear or delete the stored data for the site
4. Reload kimi.ai and sign back in

This logs you out and removes Kimi's locally stored state. After signing back in, the sidebar should rebuild from a clean state.

Step 6: Check your account and sign-in

If Kimi loads but the sidebar is empty:

• Confirm the correct account. If you use more than one Kimi account, you may be looking at one with no history while your conversations sit on another. Check which account is active.
• Sign out and back in. A session token can expire or become corrupted, leaving the interface partially authenticated and the sidebar empty. Sign out completely, close the tab, reopen kimi.ai, and sign in fresh.

Conversations held while signed out are not saved to your account, so they will not appear later.

Step 7: Try a different browser

If the issue persists, test in a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari).

• If history loads in one browser but not another, the problem is specific to your original browser installation.
• Common causes are full browser storage, a corrupted profile, or an outdated browser version.

Updating the browser to the latest version often resolves unexplained loading issues.
