Character.AI History Not Loading: How to Fix It

Character.AI stores your conversation history in your account, accessible through the app or web interface at character.ai. When history fails to load — showing a blank screen, a loading spinner that never resolves, or a list of conversations that's clearly incomplete — it's usually one of a small number of fixable problems.

Work through these fixes in order. Most history loading issues resolve within the first few steps.

Fix 1: Hard refresh the page

Before anything else, try a hard refresh. This forces the browser to reload the page and its resources from the server rather than using cached versions:

• Windows/Linux: Ctrl+Shift+R or Ctrl+F5
• Mac: Cmd+Shift+R

A hard refresh takes a few seconds. If the history loads after this, the issue was a stale cached page state.

Fix 2: Clear browser cache and cookies for Character.AI

A corrupted or outdated cache is a frequent cause of loading problems on AI platforms. Clearing the cache for Character.AI specifically is less disruptive than clearing all browser data:

Chrome:

1. Click the padlock or info icon in the address bar while on character.ai
2. Click "Cookies and site data"
3. Click "Delete data"
4. Reload the page and sign in again

Firefox:

1. Go to Settings → Privacy & Security
2. Under Cookies and Site Data, click "Manage Data"
3. Search for "character.ai" and remove its entries
4. Reload and sign back in

After clearing site data you'll be logged out and will need to sign in again. Check whether history loads once you've re-authenticated.

Fix 3: Sign out and sign back in

An expired or invalid session token can cause the app to show a logged-in state but fail to retrieve account data including history:

1. Click your profile icon or account settings in Character.AI
2. Sign out completely
3. Close the browser tab or app completely
4. Reopen Character.AI and sign back in

After re-authentication, the session is fresh and the history should load from the server correctly. This is a common fix after app updates or extended periods without logging in.

Fix 4: Check you're on the right account

Character.AI users sometimes have multiple accounts — one created with Google sign-in, one with email, one created on the mobile app. If you're signed into a different account than the one that has your conversation history, history will appear empty.

1. Look at the account name or email shown in your Character.AI profile settings
2. Confirm this is the same account you used for the conversations you're looking for
3. If not, sign out and sign back in with the correct account credentials

If you're not sure which account you used, try signing in with each sign-in method you have (Google, email, etc.) and check which one has your conversation history.

Fix 5: Try a different browser or device

If the issue persists, isolate whether it's browser-specific:

1. Open Character.AI in a different browser (Firefox instead of Chrome, or vice versa)
2. Sign in with the same account
3. Check whether history loads in the new browser

If it loads in the other browser, the issue is specific to your primary browser — a browser extension conflict, a deeper cache issue, or browser settings interfering with Character.AI's loading behaviour. Try disabling extensions one by one in your primary browser to identify if one is causing the problem.

Fix 6: Check for a Character.AI service outage

Character.AI occasionally experiences service disruptions that affect history loading. Before spending more time troubleshooting:

1. Check Character.AI's official status page or their social media accounts for outage announcements
2. Check whether other users are reporting the same problem (Reddit's Character.AI communities or X/Twitter searches for "character.ai history")

If there's a known service issue, the fix is to wait. Platform-side outages typically resolve within a few hours.

Fix 7: Update the app (mobile users)

On mobile, an outdated app version can cause loading failures:

1. Open the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android)
2. Search for Character.AI
3. If an update is available, install it
4. Open the updated app and sign in

App updates sometimes include fixes for known history loading bugs. Running on an outdated version can expose you to problems that have already been patched.

Fix 8: Disable browser extensions

Browser extensions — particularly ad blockers, privacy tools, or other AI-related extensions — can interfere with Character.AI's JavaScript loading:

1. Open your browser's extensions/add-ons manager
2. Disable all extensions
3. Reload Character.AI and check if history loads
4. If it does, re-enable extensions one at a time until you identify which one is causing the conflict

Ad blockers and strict content security extensions are the most common culprits. Once you've identified the conflicting extension, either whitelist character.ai in that extension or keep it disabled while using the platform.

Fix 9: Contact Character.AI support

If none of the above fixes work, the issue may be specific to your account. Contact Character.AI support at support.character.ai with:

• A description of what you're seeing (blank history, partial history, loading error)
• The browser and operating system you're using
• When the problem started
• What you've already tried from this guide

Searching Character.AI conversation history

Once history is loading correctly, the next limitation most users encounter is the absence of full-text search. Character.AI doesn't provide a way to search through conversation content — you can scroll through your chat list and use browser find-in-page within an open conversation, but there's no cross-conversation search.

LLMnesia is a browser extension that indexes Character.AI conversations locally as you browse them, adding full-text search across your conversation history. Install it from the Chrome Web Store, browse through your Character.AI conversations to build the index, and search by keyword through the extension popup.

Backing up Character.AI conversations

Character.AI does not currently offer a bulk conversation export. For conversations you want to preserve regardless of platform changes, copy important content to a document or note-taking tool.
