Character.AI Chat History: Search Every Conversation

Search the text you have saved, or open a character's chat history to locate a past session. LLMnesia can search captured Character.AI chats across characters; it cannot search messages that have never reached its local index.

Character.AI announced a Chapter 11 sale process on October 12. It says the service remains available while it seeks a buyer, and may close if no suitable bid allows continued operation. This is not a confirmed shutdown date. See Character.AI's announcement. Keep copies of conversations that matter to you, and check that you can read them independently of the site.

Find a chat in Character.AI

Open the character you remember and look for its previous chats or history controls. Check that you are signed into the right account. Recent characters can help you find a starting point, but are not proof of a complete history.

Browser history can locate previously visited Character.AI pages. Search for character.ai and inspect the titles and dates. Chat URLs can contain opaque identifiers, so a character name is not guaranteed to appear in the address.

Inside an open chat, use Ctrl+F or Cmd+F for loaded text. Scroll to load earlier messages first. Browser find cannot search messages the page has not loaded.

Search saved conversations with LLMnesia

Install LLMnesia in a supported desktop browser, open Character.AI while signed in, and start Import history from the extension. Version 0.4.19 can discover multiple sessions per character and archived chats, subject to what the service returns. Watch import progress and inspect errors. A failed or partial import does not mean the missing chats were deleted.

Search for a character name, an unusual phrase, or a story detail. Filter to Character.AI when you want results only from that platform. Open a saved copy to read the text already captured, even if the provider is unavailable. Copy transcript gives you a readable copy to save elsewhere.

LLMnesia saves and searches captured text locally. Optional Vault sync uploads encrypted copies when you enable it. Neither capture nor import can recover messages the source no longer provides. A search index is not a substitute for a separate backup: removing an extension or clearing its storage can remove local copies.

Search an official export

Request your account data through Character.AI's settings. The published estimate is 3 to 4 weeks; the download link expires after 7 days. The help article does not specify its format or guarantee complete chat coverage. Inspect what arrives before choosing a reader, and avoid uploading private conversations to an unfamiliar online converter.
