Google AI Mode History: Find, Resume, Export or Delete It

Your Google AI Mode conversations can appear in more than one history surface. Start with AI Mode history to reopen and continue a conversation. Use Search Services History or My Activity when you need account-level controls, date filters, deletion, or an export path.

Google is gradually moving Search accounts from the older Web & App Activity wording to Search Services History. That means two people can follow the same instructions and see different setting names. The underlying question is the same: is Google allowed to save signed-in Search activity for this account?

The four history surfaces are not the same

Knowing which layer you are looking at prevents two common mistakes: assuming a missing sidebar item means the conversation was deleted, and deleting one activity entry while leaving a related Search entry behind.

How to find and resume an AI Mode conversation

On a computer:

1. Go to Google AI Mode while signed into the Google account you originally used.
2. Open AI Mode history from the left side.
3. Choose the earlier search or conversation.
4. Ask a follow-up in the Ask anything box to continue from that context.

If the conversation is absent, check the account avatar before doing anything else. Personal, work, and school Google accounts keep separate histories.

Why AI Mode history may be missing

Work through these in order:

1. Wrong Google account: switch to the account used for the original search.
2. History was off: open your Google Search history controls and look for Search Services History. On accounts that have not received the new controls, check Web & App Activity instead.
3. Managed account restrictions: a Workspace administrator can disable Search or Assistant services, which can make history unavailable.
4. Auto-delete removed it: Google lets people automatically delete older activity after a chosen period.
5. You searched while signed out: the activity may exist only in browser or on-device history and will not appear in the signed-in account.
6. You deleted it: erased Search history cannot be restored through Google’s account controls.

Turning history on now affects future activity; it does not recreate a conversation that was never saved to the account.

How to search for a known AI Mode topic

For a recent session, scan AI Mode history first because it is the quickest path back into the conversation. For an older item:

1. Open My Activity or Search Services History.
2. Filter to the relevant Search product or feature when that filter is available.
3. Narrow the date range.
4. Search for a distinctive phrase from your original query rather than a broad topic.

Google’s account history is useful for finding activity, but it is not the same as a dedicated full-text archive of every word in every generated answer. If a response matters, save the important output separately instead of treating the sidebar as the only copy.

How to delete one AI Mode conversation

1. Open AI Mode.
2. Select AI Mode history.
3. Open the menu beside the conversation.
4. Choose Delete.

Google says the item may remain visible in My Activity for a short period and should be automatically removed there in less than 24 hours. You can remove it manually from My Activity if you do not want to wait.

There is one extra edge case: if you started with an AI Overview and selected Dive deeper in AI Mode, Google may record both the original Search and the transition into AI Mode. Deleting the AI Mode conversation does not necessarily delete that separate original Search entry. Check Search history if you want both removed.

How to delete all AI Mode history

Open the menu at the top of AI Mode history and choose Delete all. If your goal is broader data deletion rather than simply clearing the AI Mode list, review Search Services History or My Activity as well. Those account controls let you delete a custom date range, all time, or configure automatic deletion.

Deletion and disabling future history are separate actions. Deleting old items does not automatically stop Google from saving new ones, and turning history off does not necessarily delete activity that is already stored.

How to export AI Mode and Search history

Google says Search Services History can be downloaded through Google Takeout:

1. Open Google Takeout while signed into the correct account.
2. Deselect products you do not need.
3. Select the relevant Search activity export.
4. Create the export and download it when Google makes it available.
5. Store the archive somewhere protected, because search and AI histories can contain sensitive questions, uploads, and inferred interests.

An account export is a point-in-time archive. It should not be treated as a continuously updated backup, and the exported structure may not reproduce the original AI Mode interface.

What Google may save from AI Mode

Google’s Search Services History documentation says saved activity can include:

• Search queries and results you view
• Generative AI responses in AI Mode
• Images and files uploaded to AI Mode when the related media setting is enabled
• Sites viewed through Search services
• Device, language, referrer, and approximate-location context associated with the activity

The same documentation explains that saved Search history can be used for personalisation and product improvement, including generative-AI model training. Turning Search Services History off stops future account-linked activity from being used for that model training unless you explicitly submit feedback; it does not erase past activity automatically.

A practical backup rule

Use AI Mode history for continuity, not as the only home for valuable work. Copy durable outputs into the project where they belong, periodically export account history if it matters, and keep sensitive archives encrypted.
