How to Delete All ChatGPT Conversations (and What Happens to the Data)
You can clear your entire ChatGPT history in a few clicks, or remove conversations one at a time. Here is how to delete all chats, what actually gets removed, and how to keep what matters.
You can delete all your ChatGPT conversations in a few clicks from Data Controls, or remove them one at a time from the sidebar. Bulk deletion is permanent through the interface, so the important step is keeping anything you might need before you clear everything. This post covers how to delete all chats, how to remove individual ones, what actually happens to the data, and how to preserve what matters first.
Three ways to remove conversations
Pick the method that matches what you want to achieve.
| Goal | Method | Reversible? |
|---|---|---|
| Wipe everything | Clear or delete all in Data Controls | No |
| Remove a few chats | Delete each from the sidebar | No |
| Declutter without losing | Archive instead of delete | Yes |
How to delete all conversations at once
- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings.
- Select Data Controls.
- Use the option to clear or delete all conversations.
- Confirm when prompted.
This removes every conversation from your account in a single action. Because there is no user-facing trash to restore from, treat it as permanent. If you are clearing history to start fresh rather than to remove something specific, consider archiving first so you keep a fallback.
How to delete individual conversations
If you only want to remove certain chats:
- Open the conversation list in the sidebar.
- Open the menu for the specific conversation.
- Choose delete and confirm.
This is the right approach when most of your history is worth keeping and only a few chats need to go.
Archive instead, if you only want a cleaner list
A common mistake is deleting conversations to tidy the sidebar, then realising later you needed one. Archiving solves the clutter without the risk: it removes a conversation from the main list but keeps it in your account, and you can restore it from the archived chats area in settings. If your goal is organisation rather than removal, archive.
What actually happens to deleted data
Deleting removes conversations from your account and they stop appearing in your history. OpenAI does not offer a way to restore deleted chats through the interface, so from your perspective they are gone. Providers may retain limited data for a short period for legal and abuse-prevention reasons, which is separate from your access to it. For the detail on this, see does ChatGPT keep deleted conversations?.
One important distinction: deletion is not the tool for controlling training. Turning off model training in Data Controls is forward-looking and does not retroactively remove data already used. Deleting a conversation removes it from your account but is a different action with a different purpose.
Keep what matters before you clear everything
The risk with a full history wipe is deleting something you later need: a useful answer, a piece of code, a draft. Two ways to protect yourself first:
- Export your data. ChatGPT can produce a download of your conversations. Good as a one-time archive. See how to back up AI conversations.
- Keep a local index. LLMnesia is a free, local-first Chrome extension that searches your AI chat history across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and 10+ platforms. It indexes your conversations on your own device as you browse them, so even after you delete everything from ChatGPT, you retain a searchable local copy of what was said. Index first, then delete with confidence.
If you also want to stop saving new conversations going forward, see how to use ChatGPT without saving history.
Quick recommendation
- Decide whether you want removal (delete) or just a cleaner list (archive).
- Before a full wipe, export or index your conversations so you keep what is useful.
- Use Delete all in Data Controls for everything, or per-chat delete for a few.
- Remember deletion is permanent through the interface, and separate from training controls.
Frequently asked
How do I delete all my ChatGPT conversations at once?
Open Settings, go to Data Controls, and use the option to clear or delete all conversations. This removes all chats from your account in one action. Deleting individual chats is done from each conversation in the sidebar. Bulk deletion is permanent through the interface, so export anything you want to keep first.
Does deleting ChatGPT conversations remove them everywhere?
Deleting removes conversations from your account and they stop appearing in your history. OpenAI does not provide a user-facing trash to restore them, so treat deletion as permanent for your purposes. Providers may retain some data briefly for legal or abuse-prevention reasons, which is separate from your ability to access it.
Is deleting a conversation the same as archiving it?
No. Archiving removes a conversation from the main sidebar but keeps it in your account, and it can be restored. Deleting removes it and is not reversible through the interface. If you only want to declutter your list, archive instead of delete.
Does deleting my ChatGPT history stop it being used for training?
Deletion and training are separate. Turning off model training in Data Controls stops future conversations being used to improve models, but it is forward-looking and does not retroactively remove data already in a completed training run. Deleting a conversation removes it from your account but is not the mechanism for controlling training.
How do I keep the conversations I want before deleting the rest?
Export your data or keep a local index first. LLMnesia is a free Chrome extension that indexes your ChatGPT conversations on your own device as you browse, so even after you clear your ChatGPT history you retain a searchable local copy of what was said. Index first, then delete with confidence.
