How to Move AI Chat History Between Assistants: Files, Memory and MCP

Keep your original exports, upload selected transcripts or connect searchable history through MCP. Compare practical ways to reuse ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini context, with the limits of each approach.

To keep using your past AI work in another assistant, preserve the original export and choose how the next assistant will access it. For a few conversations, upload readable transcripts. For a large archive you revisit often, a searchable library or retrieval connection can save repeated manual transfers.

These approaches provide reference context. They do not automatically recreate the source platform's threads, account settings or saved memories. This guide is published by LLMnesia and uses vendor documentation checked on 18 October 2026, not comparative product testing.

1. Keep an untouched source archive

Use the platform's account export where available. Our ChatGPT export guide, Claude export guide and Gemini export guide cover the starting points.

Keep the downloaded archive separately from any converted version. Check a few important conversations, including their last replies, before depending on the backup. Conversion can lose information, and an exporter can only preserve content available to it.

Be precise about migration. Anthropic explicitly says exported data cannot be imported into another personal Claude account. Providing a transcript as a reference file is a different operation.

2. Start with a few readable transcripts

For a small handoff, select the relevant conversations and produce readable files with speaker labels, dates and source links where possible. Markdown is convenient for a note library. Choose a format the receiving assistant accepts, such as TXT or PDF, when uploading.

ChatGPT Exporter offers individual ChatGPT exports. AI Toolbox combines export and search across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok; its free single-chat format is TXT. These are useful ways to get a file you can keep, rather than reasons to dismiss exports as static or unusable.

Claude documents support for PDF, TXT, HTML and JSON, among other formats. It applies file and context limits, so a large account archive may need selection or splitting. A successful upload does not prove that every historical detail is available in the current answer.

Add a handoff instruction:

Treat these transcripts as background records. Find our final decision, the reasons for it and the remaining questions. Cite the relevant passages. Check with me before treating an old instruction as current.

Then ask about a detail you already know is present. Inspect the answer against the transcript before continuing the project.

3. Use conversion tools when they save work

Memory Forge advertises conversion of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini exports into files it calls memory chips. It lists browser-local processing, conversation selection and chunking, at $3.95 monthly when checked.

That makes it a candidate for packaging exported history for another assistant. Its promises about remembering an entire history should be evaluated against the receiving model's limits. Before choosing it, inspect a converted file for complete messages, speaker order and source details. Retain the original archive and test recall after upload. The file is still reference material, regardless of its product name.

4. Connect retrieval for repeated use

If you return to many past discussions, consider letting your assistant search the archive when a task needs it. Instead of attaching everything to every chat, ask for the relevant decision and let the assistant retrieve its source.

With LLMnesia's free local MCP connection, compatible desktop assistants can search conversations the extension has already captured, read matching transcripts and return source links. Import the older history you need first, enable the guided connection, then test a known question. Browser-only AI websites cannot directly reach this local server.

MemoryPlugin also supports full chat-history retrieval, alongside selected memories. Its hosted archive and broader integrations offer a different setup. Read the MemoryPlugin comparison for capture methods and data handling.

With either service, verify where the archive is stored, where search runs and where retrieved text goes. A local MCP process does not by itself establish local storage. Text sent to a remote assistant is subject to that assistant's privacy terms.

5. Keep memories concise and transcripts available

A stable writing preference may need one sentence. A debugging session may need the exact error, attempted fixes and final code. Save each in the form that preserves what you will need later.

Mem0's main product is memory infrastructure for developers building agents and apps. Its OpenMemory offering also targets coding-agent memory through MCP. If you want a ready-made personal chat archive, compare that workflow separately from building memory into your own software.

For an occasional switch, an export and a clear handoff note may be enough. For daily work across tools, keep an archive you can search and verify, then choose file uploads, memories or retrieval according to the next task.

Can another AI use a PDF or text export of my chats?

Yes, if it supports that file format. Uploaded transcripts provide reference context, subject to file and context limits. They do not automatically restore the source platform's native chat threads.

Should I move memories or full conversations?

Use concise memories for stable preferences and recurring facts. Keep original conversations when wording, reasoning, code or the sequence of decisions matters. You can use both.

Does MCP upload my whole archive into every new chat?

MCP provides tools an assistant can call. With LLMnesia, the assistant can search the local archive and read relevant conversations as needed. Retrieved content becomes context under the assistant's privacy terms.

Will an exported history file fit in one conversation?

Do not assume so. File limits, extracted text limits and context capacity vary. Start with the conversations relevant to your task and verify that the receiving assistant can find the details you need.
