Why Is ChatGPT Not Saving My Conversations? Causes and Fixes

If ChatGPT is not saving your conversations, it is almost always a setting or account issue rather than data loss. The common causes, in order

The first two account for most "ChatGPT is not saving my chats" reports, and both are settings, not faults.

Cause 1: you are in a Temporary Chat

Temporary Chat is the single most common reason. By design, a Temporary Chat does not appear in your history, does not use or update memory, and is not used for training. Cause 2: chat history is turned off

ChatGPT has a setting that controls whether conversations are saved to your sidebar. If it is off, new chats are not stored. To check:

1. Open Settings.
2. Go to Data Controls.
3. If chat history is off, turn it back on.

Important: conversations you had while history was off were never saved and cannot be recovered. Turning it on only affects future chats.

Cause 3: you are on a different account

If you have more than one ChatGPT login (personal, Google, work), new chats save to whichever account you are currently in. If you are looking at a different account's sidebar, your chats will appear to be missing. Confirm the account email in Settings and sign in with the one you intend to use.

Cause 4: a loading or sync glitch

If history is on, you are on the right account, and you are not in Temporary Chat, but new chats still do not appear, it is likely a display or sync issue. Universal browser-level fixes resolve most of these:

1. Hard refresh the page.
2. Clear the site's cached files and cookies, then sign back in.
3. Disable extensions or open ChatGPT in an incognito window to test.
4. Try a different browser or device on the same account.
5. Check the official status page for an outage.

How to make sure conversations are always kept
